Canon has just announced its new reflex expert EOS 70D that takes over from the venerable EOS 60D that appeared three years ago. This new EOS APS-C competes directly with the Nikon D7100 that appeared a few months ago. We took advantage of this announcement for the propose of a face-to-face highlighting the main differences between the two.

Face of the progress made by the manufacturers in the area of digital SLR cameras, the only reading of a technical sheet may not be sufficient to make this choice. Attachment to the brand, ergonomics, design of the enclosure are more subjective criteria that should be taken into account.

Nevertheless, some technical criteria may be indicative of a greater ease in achieving the desired result according to your specific needs. The comparison presented here highlights the main differences between the Nikon D7100 and the Canon EOS 70D, two experts proposed in addition to a rate near. Varying with the time and the promotional offers, we have not integrated it in our comparative grid.

APS-C sensor

Sinews of war in terms of digital SLR camera, the sensor are the main discussion topic when we try to compare two models. If the two competitors are both equipped with a sensor CMOS APS – C, Nikon D7100 prevails in terms of the definition with 24Mp for 20 only to Canon 70D. The fact more Nikon overlook low-pass filter pledge of a better image definition when it comes to assessing the fine details.

Emphasis will be given to the sensitivity more than to the definition at the time of the choice and on this plan the two cameras are virtually equal game. The D7100 offers a sensitivity ranging from 100 to 6400 ISO with a limit value to 25600 ISO while the Canon EOS 70D offers 100 to 12800 ISO with a limit value to 25600 ISO. It should compare the respective levels of noise to make a real difference, but the first tests DxO who will have the last word when the 70D will be available.

Autofocus System

The autofocus module of a housing expert is usually one of the points that the differential it from its little brothers of range. With the D7100 Nikon, the case is equipped with and add-on to 51 collimators including 15 in crosses models pros of the mark. The Canon 70D embeds a new module AF module to 19 collimators, a real novelty compared with the 9 collimators of the 60D.

Beyond the sheer number of collimators, it must look at the responsiveness and accuracy of the auto focus operation as a whole. The D7100 has proven its know-how in the field, remains to wait for the first tests of the 70D for more information on the Canon expert. It could well take a step ahead in terms of responsiveness with new technology by phase correlation, which, according to Canon, allows to significantly accelerating the speed of development compared to competing systems.

Shutter

Another topic of discussion on specialized forums, the life expectancy of the shutter of the housing is a concern for many users. If we do not have that very rarely heard talk about packers who have rendered the soul before the time, let us remember however that the shutter of the Canon 70D is given for 100,000 triggers while that of D7100 is given for 150,000 .

Each will draw the necessary conclusions but do not forget that once these numbers of triggers are reached, your case will not stop working. It may even be that it lasts for a few more years since it is an estimate more than a limit value.

More interesting are the extreme than these shutters are capable of. And there the two competitors are equal: 1/8000 of second and 1/250° in sync flash for both, a point everywhere!

Burst Mode

The burst mode interested sports photographers as well as all those who like dissect the datasheets ( ! ). They may therefore deviser on the 7 frames/second of the Canon 70D that they will compare to 6 frames/second of the D7100.

We prefer to look at the capacity of the buffer that allows (or not) to manage these bursts when they are really necessary. The Nikon D7100 is still a little limited on this plan with a buffer of 28 images to JPG Fine and 7 images in RAW (Nikon data). Canon announces 65 JPG and 16 RAW, a little more comfortable values if you have the easy trigger.

Viewfinder

Ah, the viewfinder! We expect to have a true large viewfinder on these expert models, while not all offer.

Nikon has equipped its D7100 of a rater nice viewfinder with 100% coverage. The Canon 70D is a little less well since its viewfinder only covers ‘ that ‘ 98% of the field.

It will be a little bit cautious at the time of framing to take account of the 2% of field not covered, however we will focus more on the quality of the aims which remains an important criterion at the time of the choice. Brightness, accuracy and clarity of the viewfinder are more than ultimate coverage once the enclosure is implemented on the ground.

Rear screen LCD

The debate rages between lovers of adjustable screens and conservatives preferring good old fixed screens integrated into the housing. The first address for Canon and the swivel-screen and the 70D-touch screen while the latter will opt for the D7100 and its fixed screen (but not touch) very conventional.

About the definition, the D7100 keeps a short length in advance with 1,228,000 1.040.000 on the 70D points. The size of the screen on the D7100 is 3.2 inches for 3 for the 70D, in common use it made little difference.

Here too it would be the first tests to look at the quality of the display, which beyond the only technical data is the true criterion to be taken into account. The screen of the Canon of Clear View II TFT technology could prove to be more pleasant than the D7100, case to follow…

Video Mode

No offense to some, expert casing are very often used for shooting video now and not only by professionals. Our two competitors are almost game with video modes, which both offer a H. 264 format and a resolution of 1920 ×1080.

The D7100 is a little more permissive in terms of frame rates of shooting since the latter offers 60, 50, 25 and 24 im. /sec. when the 70D is limited to 30, 25 and 24 im. /sec. The videographers experts will appreciate.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics and access to the controls are essential criteria for the expert models since they are often the only real differentiators compared to entry-level models with the quality of the module AF.

The D7100 as the 70D offer close to ergonomics, with a top cover giving access to essential commands. The two displays are created equal; some will prefer the Nikon a little earlier and offering a better reading of information while others will opt for the Canon, which the bar graph is a little more specific.

The two enclosures have a side key on the left side of this cover that gives access to shooting modes. Only the symbols differ, the modes are the same one as in the other.

Only one significant difference between the two competitors, the Canon has a sub dial located on the top of the enclosure while Nikon has opted to place the knob on the front panel. The fans of each brand will see some logic… brand, the other will take the unit in hand to know what works best for them.

Protection and sealing

The Canon EOS 70D is treaty antistreaming and has many seals. In the Nikon it has equipped the D7100 for additional seals on the edges of the frame, it is a little better in the absolute.

The two shells are however designed to withstand weather commonly encountered by their users. Only the pros of both brands are resistant to ( almost ) everything and it must be recognized that few amateur photographers experts are subject to their hardware that is capable of supporting. So do not be afraid to leave the days of bad weather with the D7100 or the 70D, you fear nothing.

Memory Cards

Nikon offers a dual SD/SDHC slot on its D7100 when Canon limited its EOS 70D to a single slot SD/SDHC cards. A difference which can be critical to the use, especially for users who wish to change photo to video mode during the same session of shooting. It is indeed eaiser to have two cards at the same time, the one saving the photos while the other recorded the videos.

Canon has somewhat failed on this point while its expert housing is expert is particularly capable in video mode and the brand has been able to make the difference with the previous generations of cases.

Wifi Module

Assign a good point to Canon for featuring its EOS 70D of a Wifi module integrated control the unit remotely from a smartphone. Nikon with the addition dongle for its D7100, if the final result is the same it is the tariff which suffers since this Wifi dongle Nikon is to acquire in option.

Dimensions, weight and battery

10 Grams of less in favor of the 70D and a few millimeters of difference more or less, nothing therefor to report as regards the dimensions and weight of the two cameras.

The battery life is also substantially the same since Nikon promises 950 triggers when Canon announced 920. You will not make your choice on this single value!

Our opinion on the Nikon D7100 and Canon EOS 70D

With these two expert models, we are in the presence of two hight performance enclosures that have not much to envy models pros if this is a full frame sensor. The choice of the APS-C sensor must be done in any lucidity, this format allows dispose of relating focal more interesting when we are interested in the animal photo for example. The enclosures are more compact and lighter than the models full format and more accessible financially.

If there was a need to distinguish between the two trade brands, we would be putting forward a sensor a little more rich in pixels on the Nikon and the absence of low-pass filter which gives a better image definition. Well excavated shadow overs will prefer the absence of low-pass filter D7100 for this.

The Canon EOS 70D is an excellent compromise in the face of competition (don’t forget the Sony Alpha 77 and the Pentax K5 II), it is recessed in on several points without any criterion is really critical at the time of the choice.

It is therefore on attachment to the brand that you choose for one or the other of these two models if the differences with the sensor, rear screen or memory card slot does not bother you. And of course on the fact that you already have, or not, of the optics for Nikon or Canon. As to the price war which should not missed to occur, we’ll talk to you as the announcement of promotional offers.
