Nikon has announced today the new evolution of their Nikon 1 system, the Nikon 1 J4, a CSC camera. Two details make this model stand out from the rest: its very fast hybrid approach, which now has 171 focal points, and new image Nikon EXPEED 4A image processor.
This model is therefore ideal for situations requiring a quick reaction, time such as street or even action photography.
Nikon 1 J4, image quality, focus, and more
An 18.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, 160-12800 ISO sensitivity, EXPEED 4A image processor and no low-pass optical filter are the main features that should ensure a good image quality. The new image processor is supposedly much faster, so you should also notice a performance improvement in comparison with of previous models (noticeable in burst modes).
It is precisely in this regard where this model stands out above reflex cameras, reaching reach 20fps in RAW format, without fixed focus, and 60fps, also in RAW, with fixed focus in the first frame. In this regard, the 171-point hybrid approach (135 for the previous model) has a big say when it comes to quality.
On the back, we can find a touch screen with a very fast response. The camera can connect to another device via Wi-Fi. The screen is 7.5 cm (3 inches) and has a 1037000-pixel resolution. Using this screen, you can focus, shoot and adjust basic settings. You can also combine the touch operation with conventional controls. For example, you can use the screen to select the focus point and then shoot with the shutter button. It all depends on your preferences.
This camera comes with a high-speed NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM lens, which is also retractable.
Nikon 1 J4’s video capabilities
The new Nikon 1 J4 is capable of recording Full HD video and has many recording options. It features different video modes and several styles that are perfect for beginners.
Just like the rest of the Nikon 1 cameras, the Nikon 1 J4 allows you to capture high-resolution still images while recording by simply pressing the shutter button; also, the new automatic image capture system analyzes each frame and takes pictures automatically when the best conditions present themselves, using different methods: Capturing the best moment (Active Choice, Smart Photo Selector and slow view).
It has a Fast Motion function to, for example, give emphasis to a certain part of our videos when recording fast-moving people or objects, or another function to record a series of 4-second mini-videos. Its slow motion function can turn a three-second video into a 12-second 120fps HD clip.
Conclusions, availability and price
This camera features an excellent 18.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, the same the Nikon 1 V3 features, and the new EXPEED 4A image processing system from Nikon. All this provides great versatility whether you want to take pictures or record video. The camera feels and controls very fast, which ensures great results no matter the circumstances.
The Nikon 1 J4 will be available soon.
