Other than the new S2, Nikon has also presented the new AF-S NIKKOR 400mm F/2.8E FL ED VR, a hyper zoom FX fixed lens, with a teleconverter that multiplies the focal distance by 1.4. The new zoom lens, will replace the prior 400mm that Nikon already had on sale. The construction includes two fluorite elements, two ED elements and nano crystal coats that guarantee superior optical performance.
Besides this, the barrel is lighter and tripod support is more resistant allowing the transition from horizontal to vertical positions a lot easier. The new lens counts with an electromagnetic aperture mechanism which enhances automatic exposure when making use of continuous shoot at higher speeds, just like the image stabilizing feature VR (Vibration Reduction) is capable of compensating up to 4 steps.
The new construction and materials have greatly reduced the weight of the lens. Its predecessor, weighed 4.6kg, while this version does not reach the 4kg. It was designed with the purpose of being used for Sports Photography, and for professional use. It is not surprising, in fact, that the price range will be around 12,000 when it becomes on sale in August this year. The previous version, the AF-S NIKKOR 400mm F2.8 G ED VR, is currently valued at 9,000 dollars.
The other new presentation from the Japanese manufacturer, is the AF-S TELECONVERTER TC-14E III, a 1.4x teleconverter, with a new optical design, that as written, will offer the performance similar to the lens it is used with, even at high apertures. This converter, replacing the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II, uses the same features of the NIKKOR 400mm F/2.8E FL ED VR, and have a more compact design than the previous version.
The new telconverter is built on seven optical elements organized in four groups, while its previous version had five optical elements in five groups. The fluorite in the front and back optics, add water and dust resistance to the hardware. The barrel have been made more resistant to humidity, allowing the teleconverter to be used in extreme conditions. This teleconverter will also be available in August with a price range of 500 dollars.
